Sandra’s aptitude and skill along with her dare-you-to-look-away sex appeal have made her an unstoppable force within the acting and film community. For this informal celeb whose goal is to achieve global domination, Sandra is still the girl next door! Sandra positions herself in such a way that she is able to make her own career choices, which involves continuing to do indie films while taking the steps to advance her career on a larger scale. “It’s just what feels right, and perhaps that’s what makes me unpredictable.”

Sandra has also safe guarded herself by not getting swallowed up by what she considers the industry’s engrossment with looks. “There’s more to acting than trying to be the prettiest girl in the room.” Beauty for beauty’s sake is not what excites her most. “It’s the opportunities that cross your path and those roles that are rooted in truth and imagination, those are the roles that you can actually sink your teeth into.”

It was Sandra’s ability (which she discovered at a young age) to lose herself in movies, books and music that truly gave her a sense of belonging, which is why Sandra finds herself here today. It’s hard to envision that the ‘calm, cool, and collected’ beauty could ever be a cutthroat competitor. But Sandra recognizes that you have to know the rules before you can break them. This Mediterranean beauty has raw talent, no question about that, but she also has an extraordinary and unflappable work ethic.

Where are you from originally?
I was born and raised in Kingston Ontario as Sandra Marie daCOSTA, before moving to Toronto in 2000.

Can you tell us what made you want to become an actor and how you got into the business?
As a kid I always found it incredibly easy to transform a story or movie into a world in which I could immerse myself in. My imagination was and is my entertainment. I’m a day dreamer who began my career quite innocently enough with several appearances in music videos and it just took root from there.

Interesting, so your life has been rather hectic recently, wouldn’t you say?
Life is always hectic I find, whether I’m a “working actor” or if I’m in between jobs. I’m always hustling and auditioning for the next big gig and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Everyday I work on my craft whether I’m reading and keeping up-to date with what’s in production, to spending anywhere from 1-3 hours maintaining my social media outlets, to watching and studying film and creating opportunities to showcase myself. I leverage short films to hone my craft and studies so I’m always working on some aspect that’s relevant to my career.

What are some of your favorite films?
Some of my favorite films are Jaws, Cape Fear, Outsiders, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe, Risky Business, Matrix, Aliens, Pan’s Labyrinth, Scarface, Fight Club, Top Gun, Interview With The Vampire just to name a few.

You have 3 short movies coming out in 2012-2013. Care to tell us a little about them?
I’ve got 3 shorts coming out in 2012 that have begun making the festival rounds. The first is called The Sentry which is a psychological noir adaptation of the comic book series created by Marvel. The film deals with issues of alcohol abuse, a failed marriage and grandeur visions of a failed superhero dealing with his demons. Screenplay adaptation written and directed by Christopher Tung.

The 2nd is called The Agreement which is making it’s premiere at the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival. It’s a provocative comedy/drama that pushes the boundaries of the cliche “all is fair in love and war”. The character that I portray is named Maxine... she is cunning, underhanded and shameless. Written and directed by Cody Campanale.

The 3rd is The Devil Walks Among You. Taking notes from Tales From The Crypt (1972). The Story establishes itself within a seedy blues bar where a spoken word is being performed by Lily Mastema (the character I portray). To the crowd she is a complete stranger, but little do they realize what truths are about to unfold. With flashbacks to a 50’s styled diner to assist in the storytelling, it’s anyone’s guess what will be revealed. Written and directed by Ryan M. Andrews.

PRODUCED BY: BLACK GUARDISM CREATIONS & MOONLIT ROAD ENTERTAINMENT

What are some of your favorite roles to date?
I’ve loved all of them! I’ve learned something about myself with the development of each of the characters I’ve portrayed, but I definitely have my favorites. My top 2 are Maxine (Short Film - The Agreement). There’s something about portraying someone who is unlikeable while maintaining a likeable performance, and Betsy (Feature Film - SICK: Survive The Night). Betsy is the first character I’ve portrayed that required a physicality that I hadn’t had the pleasure to undertake until I came across her in 2011. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that more opportunities and characters like that of Betsy cross my path. Who doesn’t love a chick that’s packing heat?

I agree.. Are there any directors you would love to work with?
Within the Indie scene I’d love the opportunity to work with homegrown talent’s such as Jesse Thomas Cook, John Geddes, Chad Archibald, Gabriel Carrer and Paul Roberts. Mix in a little Cronenberg, Scorsese, Josh Whedon, Michael Bay, Spielberg, Tarantino, and David Fincher to spice it up.

Any actor or actress you would kill to work with?
Tom Cruise! I’d kill to work with him.

Does your family and friends support you in your career?
My family and friends do support me and what I do but at different capacities. Which works out at the end of the day.

How do you prepare for a new role, or character you are about to play?
The preparation for a new role or character varies for me from one character to the next. I try not to set limitations. I look for the greatest risk and add dimension. It’s all discovery, imagination and impulse.

Is it true when they say some actors get emotionally attached to the characters they are playing? Has that ever happened to you?
I suppose some actors get emotionally attached to the characters they portray but I don’t feel that has ever happened with me but I will say that there is one character that I hope to revisit as a means of developing her further and that is the role of Betsy in the Feature film SICK. I feel that there is much more to be discovered about her and what makes her tick.

Do you have any specific goals as to what type of roles you would like to do in the future?
My specific goals are to attain roles that are physical, relentless, and challenging. I’d like to do more character driven roles. My dream role is to be the next female James Bond or Indiana Jones.

Anything you would like to add as far as your career in movies/TV?
With regards to film and TV I’d love to get more comedy under my belt, as well as high action, fast paced films. I’m also a big fan of the Grind-house genre so Exploitation films are on the to do list as well. Historical dramas are making huge waves right now in TV. Some of my favorites are Spartacus and Game of Thrones which have highly influenced my goals.

Any bit of advice for those looking to get into the industry and what to expect?
I’m the last person to give advise... (Laughs). But I will say do what’s right for you, trust your instincts, and work your ass off!
Photography Credit: Sibel Gray | MUA Credit: Madeline Rouge
Finally, what’s coming up for you that you can announce and want to plug? What I’m most excited to announce is the theatrical release of my latest feature film SICK - Survive The Night (expected release late 2012). The story takes the audience 2 years into the outbreak, where a remaining few struggle to survive with supplies running scarce and the infected making their presence known. I play Betsy an Uzi totting survivalist.

Sandra daCOSTA | Women We Love Interview with The Man Sphere

Sandra’s aptitude and skill along with her dare-you-to-look-away sex appeal have made her an unstoppable force within the acting and film community. For this informal celeb whose goal is to achieve global domination, Sandra is still the girl next door! Sandra positions herself in such a way that she is able to make her own career choices, which involves continuing to do indie films while taking the steps to advance her career on a larger scale.

Name: Sandra daCOSTA (aka MissSandraD)
Occupation: ACTOR
Education:
  • Tom Todoroff (Scene Study) – Has worked with Harrison Ford, Samuel L. Jackson, and Liam Neeson
  • Ron Leach (Scene Study Dynamics)
  • NEXUS CANADA SPFX (Firearms Handling/Safety) – Republic of Doyle, The Hulk, Blade & Max Payne
  • Roland Parliament (Voice Over Technique) – Voice Director on the TV Series Sailor Moon
How did you get started on your current career track?
It began when I was slated to play the lead in The Apollo Effect’s latest music video, titled “The Bomb” from the album “Antisocial Disorder.” After that the opportunities began to multiply at an accelerating rate with regards to films.

What gives you the most satisfaction as an artist?
I’ve come to realize how important it is to cultivate relationships with your audience and the perfect opportunity in doing so is letting your work speak for itself. Nothing is more satisfying than knowing that your film(s) have made it in front of an audience and that in some way, shape, or form has impacted them. It’s a great reward.
What motivates or inspires you in your work?
I’m motivated by my work ethic and competitive disposition, as well as my need to succeed. If someone tells me I can’t do something, I go into overdrive to achieve it. Substance, caliber, and challenges inspire me. Roles that pique my interests are usually characters that are far removed from myself. Superimposing new layers (characters) is a very appealing challenge. The opportunity to become a whole new person is not lost on me, nor do I overlook the process. If you’re not willing to work diligently, move over and let someone else do it!
Do you have a personal work philosophy?
Definitely! Love what you do and do what you love… and always do your best!
“Don’t let failure go to your heart and don’t let success go to your head.” ~ Will Smith’s Grandma
If you weren’t doing this, what could you see yourself doing?
I can’t see myself wanting to do anything else, but if I had to venture a guess I would enjoy working for a SFX/VFX company. I would definitely like to work with Kelly Cutrone and People’s Revolution, she would make the most of my obsessive compulsive behavior and I feel I could learn a lot from her!

What are you working on right now?
I’m currently promoting three of my latest projects. The first being a feature film called “SICK – Survive The Night.” I play an Uzi-toting survivalist named Betsy who struggles to survive after an outbreak has infected the greater population.
In addition to “SICK” I also have 2 more films in the post production phase. “The Agreement” is a provocative comedy/drama that pushes the boundaries of the cliche “all is fair in love and war.” My character Maxine is a rather unlikeable character in that she is quite shameless in how she strives to achieve the upper hand. And last but not least is “The Sentry,” a film which is a psychological noir adaptation of a comic book series created by Marvel and written by Paul Jenkins (who has taken notice and supports our little film). The plot deals with issues of alcohol abuse, a failed marriage and grandeur visions of a once beloved superhero and his demons.
What do you first notice about a guy?
Eyes and lips.
What gets you interested?

Humor and intellect.
What keeps you interested?
Someone who knows how to counter my hot headed nature. It runs in the women in my family; We are a passionate tribe!

What’s your number one deal breaker?
On first meeting: Arrogance. In a relationship: Infidelity.

To stay in shape, what’s your basic diet look like?
I don’t diet (and I don’t care for the word either), I just eat healthy and in moderation. I enjoy food too much but I suppose my “diet” could be compared to the Mediterranean Diet (fruits, veg., fish and meat).
What sort of fitness plan, if any, do you follow?
4-5 days a week of HIIT/Plyometrics/Tabata training using my own body weight with sandbags, kettle-bells, UGI Ball and jump rope. I don’t have time in my schedule for long drawn out workouts, what I do takes anywhere from 12 minutes to half an hour tops and I get results! I’m a big fan of this crew: http://www.bodyrock.tv/
Favourite recipe: Steak & potatoes

iPhone or Android: iPhone baby!

One thing guys should know when talking to a beautiful woman: Keep it real.

Talk nerdy to me… from films and comics, to gaming and computers. It’s chic to be geek! Also I have a weakness for strays (let me be clear, animals) and cursing children.

What’s next for you? What’s your next big idea or project?
There are two features… that are still in the developmental stages, and another feature that I’m just finalizing details and dates for.

Sandra daCOSTA | (Re)Search My Trash - Interview with Michael Haberfelner

An Interview with Sandra DaCosta, Actress

by Mike Haberfelner

March 2011

First of all, why don't you introduce yourself to those of us unfortunate enough to not already know you?

I’m a small town girl originating from Kingston, and made the move to Toronto in 1999. I come from a rather large Portuguese family, and both of my parents were and still are determined to present my sister and I with the opportunities they didn’t have while growing up. Although I’m not sure that this is quite what my parents had in mind for me, it’s because of their very obvious work ethic that I was determined to succeed as an actor. Other than acting, I like long walks in the park, and I love to cook, but I am truly a workaholic at heart. I enjoy telling a good story, impersonations and all -- although it may be long winded, so I suggest you grab a seat.
The Devil Walks Among You
One of your upcoming films is the short The Devil Walks Among You. In a few words, what is it about and what can you tell us about your character in the movie?

The Devil Walks Among You is a tale that begins innocently enough, much like it’s predecessor, Tales From The Crypt (1972). The story establishes itself within a seedy blues bar where a spoken word is being performed by Lily Mastema (the character that I portray who happens to love the limelight and attention). To the crowd she is a stranger, but little do they realize what truths are about to unfold. With flashbacks to a 50’s styled diner to assist in the storytelling, it’s anyone’s guess what will happen and what will be revealed.

How did you become involved with the movie, and a few words about its writer/director Ryan M.Andrews [Ryan M.Andrews interview -http://www.searchmytrash.com/cgi-bin/articlecreditsb.pl?ryanmandrews%2812-11%29]?

After reading a news article regarding his latest feature film Black Eve, I was drawn to Ryan M. Andrews because of his interest in returning the horror genre back to its glory days. His idea that the quality of the story is valued over the shock factor of the in-your-face blood and gore, and that the anticipation is what gets under your skin, was a notion I could fully support. I was invited to audition for him and that’s all she wrote.
Stealin' Home

What can you tell us about Stealin' Home and your role in it?

Stealin’ Home is a cross genre short film written by Massimo Volpe and directed by Joe Mari. “Set in the summer of 1969, Brooklyn, the story follows The Red Hook Heavies (a gang) and the growing unmanageability of what they consider their turf, even more so after the first Moon landing.” This was an amazing opportunity for me to adapt a voice and accent for the role of Cheeks. She was originally conceived as a “cheap trick from the other side of the tracks,” but once we got the ball rolling she morphed into a character all her own: fast talking, quick witted, likes to hang out with the boys and their fast cars. Cheeks is the sweetest pain in the ass you’ll ever meet.

A Very Candid Game
A few words about A Very Candid Game?

A Very Candid Game, written and directed by Will Khan, is a multifaceted film dealing with corruption and the imperfections of all political systems. I play the role of Meredith, who is the mistress of the current President of Freedonia, and who confronts him with questions at a personal level. Waiting for the opportunity to catch him when his guard is down, not realizing the Pandora’s Box she is about to open, their relationship unravels as the question of identity comes into play. Along with morals and ethics, (as one another’s identity is revealed) it’s about the psychology of being true to oneself. Can we  accept ourselves as we are, even though there is conflict with who we want to be?

You are also in an upcoming feature film with the wonderful title Mr. Serial Killer – Mr. Personality Disorder - You just have to talk about that one for a bit!

This one sparks everyone’s interest, especially with a title like this. Mr. Serial Killer is a disturbing and psychotic web series featuring a group of bizarre serial killers, brought to you by Entity Films and Steven Cerritos. The deranged world of Mr. Serial Killer takes us to a darker side of Happy Ville. In this installment, we are introduced to the enigmatic Mr. Personality Disorder, an individual with bizarre multiple identities and a very disturbing, mysterious past. Familiar faces and questionable new folk fill this tale of tragic proportions. Mr. Personality Disorder was originally intended to be the second episode of the Mr. Serial Killer series, but we're still in the pre-production stages as it's now being considered for a feature length film. I play a principle character named Eva who rose to fame and garnered notoriety for a two-page spread she did in the 90’s. The money was good and life was going great until she contracted HIV, which led to the demise of her career.

A Very Candid Game

Any other of your movies you'd like to mention, any future projects?
Well, without counting my chicks before they've hatched, I may be teaming up with Ryan M. Andrews on two of his features, but I’m keeping it in the vault as to the ones on which we may be collaborating.

Let's go back to the beginnings of your career: What made you want to become an actor, and did you have any formal training?

I always knew, but apart from being involved in school plays, I never acted upon it seriously until 2005 when I moved from Kingston and began my training here in Toronto. There’s something to be said about the joy of being entertained. The first film that made a huge impression on me was Star Wars. I always wanted to be Princess Leia, because she was the first empowered woman I came across in film. The second was The Wizard of Oz although the character of Dorothy may have seemed frail and weak, her determination to work her way through a world that was unknown to her spoke volumes to me.

Do you still remember your very first shoot, and what can you tell us about this experience?

I was in grade 2 and our class was performing an adaptation of the Nativity scene. I was originally cast as a background performer, then days before we were set to perform live on TV, I was given the role of Mary. During rehearsals we didn’t have a baby sleeping in the manger and with the cameras rolling, I approached the manger to suddenly find a prop baby! I didn’t know what to do. I asked myself, “Do I unwrap it? Do I pick it up out of the manger?” In the end, I looked over at the director and motioned with my hands unwrapping the baby. I will never forget that moment. My parents still have a copy of it, and we all get a good chuckle out of watching my debut.
Stealin' Home

In general, how do you approach your roles?
Different roles call for a different approach as the needs and wants shift from character to character. Sure there are the standard things to look for within the role and the script, but I’ve found that variety is the spice of life and amps up the game and viability of my acting. The general rule of thumb for myself is to not make any assumptions and focus on the commitment to the feelings I’ve chosen with respect to the role.

I understand you have also appeared in a number of music videos. How does work on a music video set differ from work on a film set?

For me the only difference is the shooting schedule. In my opinion, music videos are a great tool and can be quality mini movies if executed well.

You live in Toronto, Canada. What can you tell us about the local (indie-)film scene?

The Toronto indie film scene is thriving, there’s no doubt about that. There is so much being filmed in Toronto (as a result, many indie films never see the light of day which is disappointing) and I think it’s because of the direction the entertainment industry has taken (a less than desirable one at that). People are constantly attempting to reinvent the wheel, which is okay, but I think what it’s got to come down to is good entertainment value for every party involved. I’d also like to see the distinction between a Canadian film and an American film dissolve. Personally, because I am a proud Canadian, I can’t tolerate hearing, “well this looks and feels like a Canadian film”. What does that actually mean? Does it mean that I/we have less of a chance at getting viewership in the US or worldwide? It feels somewhat discriminatory to me. All I can do is look for awesome projects to be a part of, and keep my fingers crossed that the story, production value and the final product are spectacular enough to transcend all plains.
The Devil Walks Among You

What would be your absolute dreamrole (no matter how impossible)?

I would love to portray the female version of James Bond--I’m referring to the Daniel Craig version, truly an assassin at heart. But I’d also like to take a stab at an exploitation film and kick some serious ass as the bad girl.

Actresses (or indeed actors) who inspire you?

I enjoy the work of Christina Ricci, Natalie Portman, Lily Tomlin, and Helena Bonham Carter. I also have a great amount of respect for Meryl Streep, she’s a definite triple treat in my eyes. As for the boys I really can’t say enough good things about Robert Downey Jr., Paul Giamatti, John Malkovich, Daniel Day Lewis, Leonardo Dicaprio, Morgan Freeman, Dustin Hoffman, just to name a few.

Your favourite movies?

Matrix, Pan’s Labyrinth, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe (Elizabeth Taylor is so amazing in this), Conan the Barbarian, Blade Runner, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Jaws, High Tension, Fight Club, and my own film Stealin’ Home.

... and of course, films you really deplored?

Sex and The City 1 & 2, Waterworld, Saw II – VI, Saw 3D, Jonah Hex and Spiderman 2 & 3.
